Why is there a budget deficit year after year?
Why is the budget always balanced through cuts to crucial programs and services?
Our tax fairness campaign brings attention to these and related questions, while also raising awareness about the unequal tax burden on corporations and wealthy individuals on the one hand, and poor and working class people, on the other.
The California Partnership uses “tax fairness” as a way to proactively address the structural issues that affect California, and to make the connections between all of our other issues. Our newest issue area, we kicked off our tax fairness work by initiating a 10 week tax fairness awareness public education campaign.
We also held a very successful “guerrilla theater” action on Tax Day to illustrate the inequities in the tax system as people paid their taxes.
We are working to incorporate the concept of tax fairness into all of our projects.
We anticipate publishing a “Tax Fairness Toolkit” for grassroots organizations in late summer 2005, including all the Tax Facts, a curriculum with fun ways to illustrate problems with the tax system, and resources for doing your tax fairness research.
